American Sweet Potatoes are short, squat and have a reddish-orange skin with deep orange flesh. The most common variety of sweet potato is Beauregard. On a low setting with a wide range of heat, it’s best to leave them in for longer periods up to about 12 hours. And if you’re going for a higher content of moisture at a low level of heat for a short time, 4-6 hours will be sufficient.

How thick should I slice my sweet potatoes for dog treats?

If you are drying the sweet potato chips in a food dehydrator, slice them between 1/4 to 1/8 inch thick. In the oven, cut them at least 1/4 inch thick, thicker if you want them as chews.

Equipment

  • Sharp knife

Ingredients

  • 1 large Sweet Potato
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil in a spray bottle

Instructions

  • Wash and slice your sweet potato to the desired thickness ( see notes)
    1 large Sweet Potato

Cooking Method 1: Oven dried

  • Preheat oven to 120˚C/ 250˚ F.
  • Place your slices on parchment paper on your baking sheet.
  • Spray your olive oil lightly over the slices.
    2 tbsp Olive oil
  • Put in oven and bake for 2 hours.
  • Turn slices over and bake for another hour.
  • Check every 1/2 hour until they reach the desired texture (chewy or crispy).
  • Remove from oven and allow to cool completely.
  • Store in an airtight container in the fridge.

Cooking Method 2: Dehydrator

  • Place your slices in the dehydrator on the food racks. Do not overlap the slices.
  • Set your dehydrator temperature to 55˚C/ 135˚ F.
  • Set they drying time to 6 hours and check the texture. Add more time if you want crunchy chip treats.
  • Store fully dried dehydrated sweet potato chews in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week.
