Pumpkin and Liver Leather Chews for Dogs

It’s the time of year when pumpkin recipes are in full swing. Pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, and now – dog treats! These homemade “pumpkin liver leather chews” for dogs are super easy to make.

They’re made with just 3 simple ingredients: pumpkin (duh), molasses, and liver sprinkles. You can even use canned organic pumpkin if you like. That’ll save you an extra step or two, but it won’t change the taste at all because there’s no sugar added to this recipe! And they’re entirely healthy too – not only is there nothing artificial about them, but they also contain vitamin A (from the pumpkins), vitamin C (from the molasses) and lots of iron (from the liver sprinkles) too!

Here’s a funny story…. I was getting all of the decorations ready for Halloween. I had carved my pumpkins and put them all around the porch. I was finishing up with the last one when I heard my dog start barking. I turned around and saw her barking at the pumpkin I had just carved. I couldn’t believe it – she had never done that before!

I started to laugh, and then I realized that she must have been scared of the pumpkin because it had an angry face. It was so funny to see her barking at it like that. But it was fine as I soon distracted her with some pumpkin treats!

But I digress. Grab your pumpkin leftovers and cook them up in the microwave or use a can of pumpkin puree and make these super chewy treats for your dog. They will spend ages munching away in bliss on these healthy treats!

Equipment

  • 1 Blender or Fork
  • 1 Dehydrator
  • 1 Spatula

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Pumpkin canned or home pureed
  • 2 tbsp Molasses
  • 1 tbsp Beef Liver Powder

Instructions

  • Add molasses to pumpkin puree. Using a fork or in a blender mix until fully mixed.
1 cup Pumpkin, 2 tbsp Molasses
  • Spread mixture over the fruit tray of the dehydrator. Make sure it is evenly spread you don't want one area to be way thicker than another as it will take longer to dry.
  • Sprinkle the liver over the pumpkin mixture.
    1 tbsp Beef Liver Powder
  • Place tray on dehydrator (I used one empty tray below) and then place the lid on. Select 130 degrees and 7 hours dehydrate time.
  • When done, allow to slightly cool then carefully remove leather from the tray. You may have to use a spatula to help you lift it off as it will stick.
  • Lay on a cutting board and cut into the size pieces you want. You can also roll them up so they are like a fruit roll/fruit leather.
