If Pets Had Thumbs Day is one of the more quirky national pet holidays around. It lets us consider a world where our cute companions developed an extra functional digit on their paws. Would this be a fun thing, because they would be able to grip toys and writing implements with better ease? Or, would it be a nightmare when they suddenly learn how to open jars and get into all kinds of trouble?
When is If Pets Had Thumbs Day?
Celebrate If Pets Had Thumbs Day on the 3rd of March. March is a month full of interesting national holidays for our pets. Later in the month, there are days dedicated to our puppies and kittens, as well as respecting our cat. We would certainly need to respect them a whole lot more if they had working thumbs!
How to celebrate If Pets Had Thumbs Day
Take part in If Pets Had Thumbs Day in a couple of ways this year. The first is to celebrate the beautiful paws and claws of our furry friends. Have you really taken the time to really look at how perfectly formed they are without a thumb?
Perhaps today is the day to teach your dog to give you a high-five. You could try it with your cat, but they might not be so obliging.
Dogs that are happy to have you handle their paws can also use this day for a nice doggy manicure. Get them comfortable on their favourite pillow, trim their nails, and give them a nice treat afterwards. Or, if they don’t need a trim, have them “supervise” your own manicure.
If you have an interest in animal anatomy, you can also use this day to learn more about the paws, hands, claws, and feet of different species. For example, have you ever seen the footage of Orangutans using human tools? Or, have you seen how amazing some prehensile tails are?
This is where things are going to get a little bit weird with the photoshopped images and theories of what our pets would get up to if they did have opposable thumbs. There is sure to be lots of amazing content out there to browse through.
