3 Tips for First Time Puppy Owners

Getting a puppy is a big decision, and one that should not be taken lightly. If you’re thinking about adding a furry friend to your family, here are three things to keep in mind.

  1. Socialization is key. Dogs are social creatures, and it’s important to start socializing them at an early age. This means exposing them to different people, places, and animals in a positive way so that they learn to be comfortable in a variety of situations. Without proper socialization, your puppy could grow up to be fearful or anxious, which can lead to behavioral problems down the road.
  2. Puppies need plenty of short bursts of exercise. A tired puppy is a good puppy. That’s because all that energy has to go somewhere, and if you don’t provide an outlet for it, your pup is likely to find their own way to let off steam – which often manifests as chewing on furniture or shoes, barking excessively, or digging holes in the yard. Lots of short walks and playtime will help burn off some of that energy.
  3. Crate training is a must. Crate training may seem cruel at first, but it’s actually one of the kindest things you can do for your puppy (and yourself). A crate gives your pup their own safe space to retreat to when they’re feeling overwhelmed or need a break from all the excitement. It also comes in handy when you need to leave the house for an extended period of time; crates prevent destructive behaviors like chewing or toileting in the house while you’re away.

Puppies are a lot of work, but they’re also a lot of fun. If you’re thinking about getting one, make sure you’re prepared for the commitment involved. With these three tips in mind, you’ll be on your way to being a great puppy parent in no time!
