Bellfor Insect Protein Based Dog Food Review
As any pet owner knows, dogs require a balanced diet in order to stay healthy. While most commercially-available dog foods contain all the essential nutrients that dogs need, some owners are looking for alternative protein sources.
Insect protein is being explored as a potential alternative to meat in dog food.
Dogs are omnivores and can digest insects pretty easily. Insects are also a good source of protein, as well as other nutrients like zinc and iron.
Some people might be grossed out by the idea of feeding their dogs insects, but it’s actually a pretty common practice in other parts of the world where meat is scarce.
There are a few companies that are already selling insect-based dog food, and we think this trend is only going to continue to grow. We were interested in trying out an insect-based dog food brand and family-run business Bellfor got in touch and asked us to try their range.
Is an insect protein based diet right for your Dog? Bellfor says YES!
Bellfor is dedicated to providing high-quality, grain-free dry dog food that is made with only natural ingredients. Dogs are “semi-carnivores” and so the food contains around 70% meat or fish. The company also puts emphasis on the happiness and welfare of dogs. They are a family-run business with over 25 years experience with processing dog food.

The truth about insect protein
First of all, insects are a sustainable and environmentally-friendly source of protein.
Insects are a complete protein, meaning that they contain all of the essential amino acids that your dog needs for muscle growth and repair. In addition, they are a good source of healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. They are also easily digestible and can help to boost your dog’s immune system.
By choosing insect protein instead of meat for your dog’s diet can help them to maintain a healthy weight, build strong muscles, and have more energy.
Because of the complex amino acid structure as well as the great digestibility of insect protein, your dog will get a lot of benefits from eating Bellfor insect-based dog food.
- Hypoallergenic protein for dogs with feed allergies
- Well tolerated by dogs with digestive problems
- Improved skin and coat health
- Effective support for the immune system
Is Bellfor insect protein dog food any good?
Bellfor offers three varieties of insect-based dog food and soft-snacks.
As a typical Frenchie, Dolly has some food allergies and a sensitive tum so we tried:
Hypoallergenic Dry food for dogs with insects – grain-free – Landgut-Schmaus by Bellfor Dog Food – 2,5 kg – £18.99
The first thing we noticed was how small and round the kibble pieces were – which is great for Dolly as she struggles with large square kibble. The food is also a lot less ‘dusty’ than other dry foods we’ve tried.
This food actually smelt pretty appetising, not your usual artificial kibble smell. I have to say, I was really impressed with it. Dolly loved it and didn’t seem to have any stomach problems with it.
She cleared her bowl every time, which is something she doesn’t always do. And her poops were firm and easy to pick up, which is always a bonus.
Overall, I’m really happy with this food and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good dry food option for their dog who has meat protein sensitivities (Dolly can’t tolerate chicken).
The Shiimun Gastro Powder is a dietary supplement for dogs that contains shiitake mushrooms.
Shiitake mushrooms have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries and are known to have many health benefits. They are a natural source of antioxidants and help to boost the immune system.
The powder can be added to your dog’s food or water and is easily digestible. It does smell really strong an it took a few sniffs from Dolly before she was convinced to try it!
We have been using the gastro powder for a few weeks now and have noticed a difference in Dolly’s energy levels and overall health.
She seems to be less tired and her coat is looking much healthier. I’m going to continue using this supplement to help keep her healthy and happy even though it’s a tad expensive for 50g! But hey, I like to spoil my old Frenchie ( Dolly’s 9 this year).
I would recommend this powder to anyone who is looking for a natural way to boost their dog’s health.
Hypoallergenic Soft Snack for dogs with insect protein – Landgut-Happen (Manor Bites) by Bellfor Dog Food – 200g – £3.35
We tried out the Landgut-Happen treats for dogs and I have to say, I was not disappointed! Dolly can be a picky eater when it comes to treats. She mostly likes cheese and ham!
The Manor Bites are a much better choice for dogs with sensitive digestion, and she did love them. The treats are a good shape, slightly soft and seem to be very tasty. The carefully selected ingredients are perfect for rewarding dogs with digestive problems in a healthy and tasty way (much better than cheese and ham!).
They’re also great for her sensitive stomach – no more upset tummy after training. The ingredients are all-natural so I know she’s getting a healthy treat.
These little snacks are perfect for training or just as a treat.
Dolly loves these and I love that they are healthy and good for her.
The Knabber-Schmaus biscuits are made with fresh meat and are grain-free. Designed as part of Bellfor’s natural dental care range of products, these biscuits help to reduce plaque and tartar build-up.
I love that they are healthy and natural, but Dolly wasn’t all that keen on these. The biscuits were hard and quite large for her little mouth, but they were easy to break into smaller pieces which she preferred. But she chose the Manor Bites over these in her little preference test.
The biscuits come in four flavours:
I would recommend the lamb or rabbit flavour as these seemed to be the most popular with Dolly.
Overall, I think these are a great treat for dogs. They are healthy and natural, but my dog wasn’t a huge fan.
Dried Meat Strips – duck, turkey, chicken & deer by Bellfor £12.85 for four packs
Oh my goodness did Dolly demolish these!
I got the four-pack which included duck, turkey, chicken, and deer. You get 8 strips in a packet which makes them 40p each so they’re on par with other dried meat products you can buy.
Dolly seemed to like all of them, but she went crazy for the duck strips. She has a cupboard where I store her food and treats and the minute she finished one strip, she was back with her nose on the cupboard and a little whimper for more!
They are a good size for her to chew on and she absolutely adored the taste. I will be investing in these again.
The Bellfor range of products are a great option for dogs with meat protein sensitivities. They are all-natural and easily digestible, and Dolly did enjoy them!
However, I think the prices are a bit on the high side for the Knabber-Schmaus biscuits which Dolly didn’t really take to and the Shiimun Gastro Powder was expensive but seemed worth it.
The Dried Meat Strips are an absolute hit and so they are going on the shopping list.
Overall, I was really impressed with the Bellfor range of products and would buy them again in the future.
