Top 10 Best Halloween Costumes for Dogs for a Howling Good Time

halloween costumes for dogs

Halloween (or Howloween as we dog lovers call it) is just around the corner and if you’re anything like me, you’ve been looking for Halloween costumes for your dog. As you know, I have a small Frenchie, so I’m going to be searching for costumes that look good on her.

In the past few years Halloween has really taken off as an opportunity to dress up your pets and take photos of them with their Halloween costumes. So if you haven’t already started thinking about Halloween costumes for your dog, you’re going to want to get on it pretty quickly!

A Halloween costume for a dog is not something you should take lightly. You want to make sure it’s going to be comfortable and easy enough for them to wear all day or night, if need be. They also can’t have anything that will get tangled in their legs while they’re walking around outside because of the risk of injury from them tripping.

Costumes can come in sizes small, medium and large depending on what size dog you have so I have included some that will suit nearly every dog breed. Remember that if your dog is not used to wearing a costume you’ll need to train them. I’ve written all about that in this article so you can get them used to wearing their costume before the big day.

There’s a Halloween costume for every size of dog, from small dogs to large dogs! There are also Halloween costumes for you and your little guy or girl to dress up as a couple too if that is what you want. I’ve included the links below where you can purchase these Halloween costumes online at Amazon.

Bat Dog (Medium to Large Dogs)

Bats, as it turns out, are creepier than we ever thought. They have a long history with halloween and witches’ stories going back centuries. In Europe, bats were believed to be the companions of witches and demonic beings that could teach magic or steal human souls.

Bats have been thoroughly embedded in halloween from early on- from wearing bat-like costumes to placing fake bat wings on doorsteps to ward off evil spirits.

Simple and effective these fun wings use velcro to attach to your dog. Put them on over the harness for safety as although there is a leash attachment, velcro is not strong enough to hold any dog! I’m sure you’ll get lots of compliments as you parade around with this costume. If you have a black dog, these are going to look super!

Pumpkin (Small to Medium Dogs)

A century ago families would carve turnips, not pumpkins. They were the halloween decoration of choice because they resembled human heads (and still do today). The tradition was brought over from Europe to America by immigrants and people started carving them into jack-o-lanterns for halloween decorations.

The idea behind halloween decorations like this is to ward off evil spirits. If you’re looking for pumpkin carving ideas I’ve got 20 in this article that don’t even require carving!

But back the costume. This costume is a great fit on small to medium dogs. Comes with a cute hat that has holes for ears. It’s well made and washable and a bargain price. Just think of all the fun photos you can take with this one. As an added bonus it will keep your little pooch warm if you’re going out trick or treating.

Spooky Black Cat (Medium to Extra Large Dogs)

Black cats have a long association with Halloween. The origins of the black cat as a symbol for Halloween is unknown but there are many theories: perhaps it was because they were seen as demonic and scary, maybe people believed that witches could turn into cats, or perhaps it was because Halloween is when the veil between the two worlds are at their thinnest – which makes sense since Halloween night can be creepy, spooky and scary. Black cats are believed to be the companions of witches that could perform magic or steal human souls.

No matter what you belive, I think you’ll love this unique costume, I’ve not seen one like it before and it’s sure to get some attention at your Halloween party! It’s good quality and surprisingly the cat stays upright on the dog’s back! Will fit everything from a Jack Russell to a German Shepherd.

Glow in The Dark Skeleton (All sizes)

Skeletons are popular Halloween icons since they are a stark reminder of death. Skeletons serve as a constant reminder that Halloween has always been a celebration of the deceased. It’s thought that on Halloween night the spirits of the dead may walk among us to visit their relative or to carry out evil deeds.

Skeletons have always been linked to Halloween, whether they’re being drawn on cards or found in Halloween decorations. Bones are one of the most identifiable Halloween symbols, so it’s no wonder that skeletons are a popular costume choice.

This adorable pet skeleton suit is the ideal companion for a spooky set of fangs (provided by mother nature). The skull and bones glow in the dark, allowing you to easily keep track of your pet.

Sizes run on the small size so my advice is to order a size up so you can get a good fit. The fabric is thin, so ideal if you are attending an indoor event, or planning to do a lot of trick or treating as your dog won’t get too hot.

I like this costume because you can also dress up as skeleton to match your dog!

Spider (Small to Large Dogs)

Spiders look scary and poisonous and symbolise bad luck and death. Spider web designs have been used on halloween decorations, making the connection more obvious. In some cultures those who survived being bitten by a spider were thought of as healers, so there is some belief that Halloween is a time to expel illness from your home.

Supposedly spiders are attracted to halloween because they believe that people will be walking on the ground where webs usually lie undisturbed during this time of year so they can catch more prey.

This halloween spider dog costume is a great way to show off your spooky pet’s personality! The googly eyes and orange furry legs really add the finishing touch for this halloween look, it’ll be sure to impress both you and any onlookers too.

The headpiece can be tricky to keep on and the legs got a bit squashed in the post, but can be plumped up. All in all this is a hilarious costume and bound to be a smash hit!

Deadly Doll (Small to Large Dogs)

Since halloween night is often linked to the spirits of the dead, dolls are an especially frightening symbol. According to popular legend, disturbing a doll can lead to damaging consequences for its keeper.

Dolls may also be used in voodoo or witchcraft practices that supposedly aim at bringing about harm or even death on an enemy.

This Deadly Doll dog costume is the perfect way to dress up your pet for halloween night. The red and white stripy jumper and the hilarious ginger wig design will be sure to stand out from a crowd, allowing you both to have an unforgettable evening! Once you’ve put it on your dog you won’t be able to stop laughing! Unless like me, you were terrified by Chucky!

The outfit fits well on most dogs but personally I would prefer it if they made the wig a bit smaller size so that it fitted better, but scissors and a bit of sewing would sort it. That being said, this Halloween costume is great value for money and I would recommend it as a perfect halloween gift idea!

Freddy – Nightmare On Elm Street (All sizes)

Some Halloween movies are more frightening than others. “Nightmare on Elm Street” is a popular movie that many people enjoy watching because of its suspenseful plot and horror scenes. The film follows Nancy Thompson, who is terrorised by Freddy Krueger, a child murderer who has found a way to enter the dreams of someone to kill them in their sleep.

So what better than to dress your pooch up in this super costume! It should be terrifying, but in reality it’s super cute and pretty well made. There’s velcro on the middle of the jumper which goes under your dog’s tummy, so you don’t see where it joins. The glove covers up the leg before velcroing around to keep it in place. The hat is also adjustable so you can keep it on your dog’s head.

Ghostbusters! (All Sizes)

In the 1984 movie, “Ghostbusters,” aptly named after those ghost-catching professionals, a team of scientists and paranormal experts study ghosts, hobgoblins and other things that go bump in the night. They eventually found a way to catch their quarry with a proton particle accelerator. So who better to call than your Ghostbusting dog on Halloween!

This Halloween Ghostbusters dog costume is the perfect way to show off your pet’s bravado this season! The cute jacket even has the official Ghostbusters logo embroidered on it. And it comes with an inflatable proton pack which makes for an extra cute halloween look. The sizing is pretty accurate and you may need to make a few tweaks to the length of the sleeves for you particular breed of dog, but otherwise this is a fancy dress winner!

Hogwarts Wizard (All Sizes)

Wizards are often associated with Halloween because they are skilled in the art of magic. They are usually portrayed as wearing long, black robes and carrying a staff. The wizard may also wear a pointy hat that is placed on the floor to signify that is what they need for their spell or ritual. And what’s more familiar in the wizarding world than Harry Potter and Hogwarts!

This costume comprises of a wizard’s cape, tie and a pair of glasses. You can choose from different coloured ties that look like the different houses in Harry Potter so you can decide if you are a Slytherin, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw!

The collar actually sits round your dog’s shoulders, rather than neck, so bear this in mind when ordering the size. Depending on your dog’s belly size you may need a little bit of extra velcro to keep it done up. The glasses aren’t special ‘dog’ glasses but if you can get your dog to wear them, it’s priceless! It’s a little over the £20 budget, but I think it’s worth it, don’t you?

The Devil (All sizes)

Actually the devil doesn’t have any link with Halloween, yet this costume is still a really popular choice. The Devil is often portrayed as wearing a red suit with horns and a red cape, and this sparkly sequin version for your dog is a great option!

Velcro holds the cape in place and there’s an elastic strap to keep the horns on. It comes in all sizes so just make sure you measure your dog and look at the size chart to get the closest match.
